Meet LMHS Choir Director and Piano Teacher, Dr. Birdsong!
Dr. Birdsong is the director of the choir and the piano teacher at Liberty Magnet High School. Her interest for choir and piano is one very ingrained in who she is, all her degrees being music-based. Her favorite part of her job is the opportunity to teach many students over the years and also learn many things from the job itself. She feels that “It's a really fulfilling thing for me to do”. She especially enjoys seeing the satisfaction on her students' faces when they finally succeed on a piece of music, “It lets me know that they are learning something and that they are continuing to excel at that.”
Future events and activities she wants to implement again for her classes are the winter arts programs, talent shows, school tour, etc. For the school tour, the choir was able to go to elementary schools and perform for them. Opportunities like these help scholars develop confidence in themselves, or in Dr. Birdsong’s words, “The more opportunities you get to perform the better your chances of wanting to get out of your comfort zone and perform, you know for the school's activities in general like the talents shows.”
When asked about her opinion on the rise or fall in the interest of art she says, “I think that the fine arts department although, we are very big on promoting our department, we want to make sure that there is a lot of support as well. I'm thankful to be in this situation where at my school, there is more of an interest in the arts.”
Furthermore, she states, “...the more they see us, the more that they see band, the more that they see the dance department, the more that they see our art department, the more they see of the theater department, and the more that they see us the choir department and piano, the word gets out that these are classes that you not only learn a lot in but you can also have fun as well.”
From the dawn of time, art has been well established in the hearts of man. At every stage of humanity, from the stone age to the renaissance, art has been crucial to civilization and society. Which makes it even better to have wonderful teachers like Dr. Birdsong continue the long tradition of art, culture, and music.
