  • OPINION: The Oscars are Becoming a Big Fat Joke | TLFP

Recently, it seems as though our favorite programs are leaning in the wrong direction. Remember the Grammys? The Academy Awards were no different. The article I dove into pieced a very strong opinion against the Academy Awards. Jenna Jeff, author of ‘ The Oscars Are a Joke, and We Let It Happen’, had a lot to say about recent Oscar winners. In her opening, Jeff criticizes the film ‘Anora’. The movie won the award for “best picture” and “best actress”. Jeff claims that this film is the beginning of the end. The Oscars are searching for more controversy than art nowadays. The films that will continue to win will be provocative and uncomfortable, such as ‘Anora’. Hollywood, in attempts to be edgy, is losing its edge in this ironic and unfortunate twist. We should expect to see small, indie films winning Oscars rather than their experienced and well-thought-out counterparts, according to Jeff. While her opinion on the topic is very definitive, there are some points to consider. I do believe that the Academy Awards and other major programs are losing their credits in the arts world. Recently, these award programs have been a fight for controversy and popularity rather than storytelling and art. I mean, just look at the outrage the Grammys caused. Unfortunately, I do see a trend rising up. As a society, we are shifting away from quality and more towards unpredictability. I believe that we as a collective are searching for the next “this hasn’t been done before!” Change is a good thing and it’s inevitable but should we fix what isn’t broken? These recent films have been in a bid for causing the most discomfort to its viewers rather than anything else. I hope that this year's films will give us movie lovers quality and creativity, such as ‘Wicked’ (which only received two awards). I also hope that light hearted, sit down movies are given to us in the future. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • The Quiet Crisis: Why Our Teachers Are Leaving | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link The Quiet Crisis: Why Our Teachers Are Leaving Lauren Hicks Aug 15, 2025 Beyond the classroom walls, a silent crisis is unfolding: the increasing departure of dedicated educators. Beyond the classroom walls, a silent crisis is unfolding: the increasing departure of dedicated educators. Step into any school, and you'll see teachers working hard, shaping young minds, and caring for their students. But look closer, and you might notice something worrying: more and more good teachers are leaving. This isn't just a small problem; it's a quiet crisis that could hurt our schools and communities. One of the main reasons teachers are leaving is burnout. They're often overworked, dealing with large class sizes, large amounts of paperwork, and not enough support. The pressure to meet standardized test goals and manage students' different needs can be overwhelming. As a result, many teachers feel stressed and exhausted, leading them to seek jobs with better working conditions and more respect. To gain deeper insight into this issue, I spoke with Mr. Warner, a former history educator of Liberty High School for 3 years. His perspective sheds light on the challenges teachers face: How did your workload and responsibilities affect your ability to stay? Work wise the workload was manageable but annoying with how much they baby yall. Having to call yall parents when yall don’t do work isn’t preparing yall for the real world or college and is extra work for teachers. Were there resources or training you wish had been available to help you succeed? We needed more chances to pull small groups to assist students more but the lack of paraprofessionals made that impossible. Were there changes in the school environment or leadership that played a role in your decision? The leadership didn’t bother me because I stayed to myself but I did feel there was a shift that I saw my colleagues feel stressed over. If you could change one thing about this school to make it a better place for teachers, what would it be? I’ll give the students more control. Put emphasis on developing the whole student vs focusing strictly on academics. If more teachers keep leaving, it's not just the schools that will lose out, the whole community will. Students will miss out on having caring, inspiring teachers who make a difference in their lives. We need to figure out why this is happening and fix it, because without great teachers, learning just isn't the same. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Many people said they were staying home, but others said this would be the biggest trailride ever. Louisiana vs Mississippi was a trailride held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and it quickly became one of the most talked about events on social media. Even though people warned that the area was dangerous, many still decided to go. Trailrides are events where people ride horses, listen to music, dance, and spend time with others. They are very popular in Louisiana and Mississippi and are a big part of Southern culture. Most trailrides are meant to be fun and peaceful, but when a lot of people show up, things can sometimes get out of control. The Louisiana vs Mississippi theme made the trailride more intense. People from both states were arguing online about which state was better. Some supported Louisiana because of the culture and music, while others supported Mississippi because of their trailride traditions. This rivalry made more people interested in the event. When the trailride finally happened, it only lasted about 30 minutes. Even though it was short, it still went viral. Videos were posted all over Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. People who did not even go felt like they were there because of how much content was shared. One video that stood out showed a girl dancing in the mud and then throwing herself into it. Many people reposted the video and joked about it. Later, it was reported that she was sent to the hospital. This made people realize that the trailride was not just fun and games and that it could actually be dangerous. I talked to my sister, my classmate vivian , my friend megan , and my cousin about the trailride. My sister said she was excited but scared. My classmate said she only watched it online. My friend said she loves trailrides but felt this one was too risky. My cousin said he went and had fun, but he stayed alert the whole time. Social media played a big role in how people saw the trailride. Even though it only lasted 30 minutes, it felt much bigger because of the videos and comments online. The event became a conversation instead of just a moment. In conclusion, Louisiana vs Mississippi was a trailride that people will not forget. Even though it was short, it made a big impact. The viral videos, especially the one with the girl in the mud who was later taken to the hospital, showed that trailrides can be fun but also dangerous. This event reminded people to be careful while still enjoying their culture and traditions. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Be Intentional | TLFP

In a culture that celebrates being busy, intentionally is often overlooked. Students move from class to practice to work without pausing to ask why they are doing what they do. Being intentional means making choices with purpose about time, relationships, and goals rather then being operating on autopilot. It’s the difference between simply getting through the day and actively shaping it. For students especially, intentionally can turn overwhelming routines into meaningful progress. Practicing intentionality starts small. It can look like setting realistic priorities instead of overloading a schedule that you know you will not get to, or choosing to put effort into a relationship that feels supportive and genuine. Intentional students think before reacting, listen before responding, and plan before acting. This mindset helps reduce burnout and regret because you have made a decision with clarity, not pressure. Rather then chasing perfection, intentionality focuses on alignment. Making sure actions match values. Ultimately, being intentional is about ownership, It reminds students that their time and energy are limited and valuable. When choices are made on purpose, confidence grows and distractions lose power. In a fast paced world that pushes constant movement intentionally encourages students to slow down, reflect, and move forward with direction. That kind of awareness does not just improve productivity, it builds a stronger sense of self. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Key Club Feeds the Community | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Key Club Feeds the Community Lauren Hicks Dec 17, 2025 Key Club is stepping up this season to support families who struggle with food insecurity by leading a schoolwide canned food drive. Key Club is stepping up this season to support families who struggle with food insecurity by leading a schoolwide canned food drive. The club is encouraging students to donate non-perishable items that will go directly to local food banks and help people who need support the most. Even though a single can may seem small, together these donations can make a real difference for the community. Food insecurity affects millions of people across the United States. Many families rely on community donations when they cannot afford enough groceries. Because canned goods last a long time, are easy to store, and can be quickly distributed, they are some of the most valuable items food banks need. During the fall and winter months, the need for food donations increases, which makes school drives like this one especially important. To understand why this drive matters and how it supports the community, I interviewed Laila Northern, a student involved in the project. She shared her thoughts on the impact of food insecurity, why student participation matters, and how small actions can create meaningful change: How does donating something as simple as a canned item create a meaningful impact on families who experience food insecurity? “A single can might seem small to us, but for families who don’t always know where their next meal is coming from, it can make a huge difference. It helps take away some of the stress they feel and reminds them that their community cares about them.” Why do you think high school clubs like Key Club play an important role in helping local communities? “Clubs like Key Club show what students can do when they work together. We have the ability to bring people’s attention to important issues and use our school community to help support others.” What motivates students to participate in donation drives, and what might encourage even more involvement? “A lot of students want to help but don’t always know where to start. When we make donating simple and explain why it matters, more people get involved. Seeing others participate also encourages more students to join in.” A single can may seem small, but when the entire school contributes, those cans can help feed an entire community. Key Club is proving the power of student leadership through this food drive. By collecting non-perishable items and raising awareness of food insecurity, the club is bringing the school together to support families in need. With support from students like Laila Northern, this drive shows how teamwork, generosity, and compassion can create a meaningful impact on the lives of many. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Goodbye, Price Tags | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Goodbye, Price Tags Demi Fleming Dec 17, 2025 Hello, dynamic pricing. Goodbye, price tags, hello dynamic pricing. This little piece of technology has been taken for granted. Almost every time you go to the store, that little piece has been fighting for you. Over the past ten years, companies have been silently trying to get rid of it, without you noticing. The scary part is that they are getting away with it. That is because a lot of people who grew up with the price tag just never realized how radical it was. Back in the eighteen hundreds, they would sell you a price they thought was important at the time. Like the length of time, if you look rich, or how you talked. If you did not like the price you would haggle. Which then started the one price system. Which changed how people shopped. It made it easier to compare prices of different stores, which made many stores go down on their prices to receive customers. Soon enough price tags were everywhere. Each of those stickers was a handshake. It represented an agreement, one price for every customer. But now that agreement is breaking. With A.I. and automated surveillance corporations are turning shopping back into a game. You probably heard of dynamic prices, the reason Uber prices keep changing and flight costs jump up and down. It feels like we are constantly being taken advantage of. It can send concert ticket prices through the roof. Companies are using algorithms to instantly change prices based on demand, competition and what they know about their customers. These algorithms are in a race to identify what the highest price at which a sale could still be made, and customers are not exactly loving it. Price changes are the language of capitalism. It's how we talk to each other about supply and demand. In some ways, having these algorithms can both benefit the company and the customers. Which also started loyalty programs, installing the apps so they can get more information about you to know what to recommend. Giving them permission to track your geolocation, internet history and social media. This is the future of the price tags. A series of algorithms that study you, that stalk you, and try to squeeze everything out of your pocket. All of this can be fixed if we had a stronger government but we know that's not happening. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Back-to-School Reset: Tips to Start the Year Strong | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Back-to-School Reset: Tips to Start the Year Strong Kaylee Martin Aug 15, 2025 Liberty Magnet is back in session! Liberty Magnet is back in session! The first week back can feel like hitting the ground running, but with a few smart habits, you can prevent the chaos and be smooth-sailing the whole semester. Starting a new school year is an important time for students to set the tone for the year. It is more than being in the classroom again. The start of school is a natural reset point, a chance to step back, evaluate what worked last year, and set up routines that will make the coming months a little less stressful. Some students may thrive on color-coded planners, while others may be OK with a controlled chaos. Many face common challenges in those early weeks, from juggling new classes and schedules to staying motivated and organized. While every student operates differently, adopting intentional strategies can help anyone begin the year on the right foot. The key is finding what works for you and committing to it. Start strong and stay ahead . One of the best ways to avoid mid-semester burnout is to frontload your efforts. According to KD College Prep, experts recommend staying ahead in your classes as long as possible. Knocking out assignments early and tackling reading before it piles up is the most efficient way to leave not only time for studying, but also extracurricular activities you may want to do after-school instead of mountains of homework. Make a routine your friend . Routines might sound boring, but they’re a student’s best defense against tardies, missed homework, and unnecessary stress. The WISE Study Tips guide from Auburn University suggests setting consistent times for waking up, studying, and winding down.Creating set “study hours” each day helps train your brain to focus at the same time, just like an athlete practices every day before the game to up their skills. Even 20 minutes of planned review each evening can keep you from cramming at midnight before a big test. Write it down…literally everything! A well-utilized planner is not just for homework. Include project deadlines, sports practices, test dates, club meetings, and even downtime. This way, you can spot busy weeks ahead of time and plan accordingly. If you’re more visual, try color-coding by category to quickly see where your time is going. No matter if you’re a paper-and-pen person or a Google Calendar lover, having all your commitments in one place can keep you from double-booking yourself and help you see busy weeks coming. Build your social toolkit. High school success isn’t just about academics. CollegeVine notes that strong social skills like communicating face-to-face, asking for help, and working well in groups can boost both your confidence and your opportunities. Start small: introduce yourself to classmates you don’t know yet, or sit with someone new at lunch. Joining a club or team can help you meet people who share your interests while giving you practice in collaboration, leadership, and public speaking. These connections can turn into study buddies, supportive friends, and even future professional contacts. Carve out a study space. Studying in bed might sound comfortable, but it’s more likely to put you to sleep than put you in the zone. KD College Prep recommends finding a quiet, organized space with minimal distractions: a clear desk, good lighting, and maybe some noise-canceling headphones or background study music. Keep all your supplies nearby so you don’t break focus by getting up to find a pen or charger. Over time, your brain will associate that spot with productivity, making it easier to switch into “study mode” when you sit down. Most importantly, stay balanced. The most successful students know when to work and when to step away. Short breaks, healthy habits, and social time can all prevent burnout. In the end, it’s not about perfection, it’s about consistency. Whether it’s starting a simple routine, finding a study method that works for you, or staying connected with friends, small steps can lead to big results. We Liberty Magnet students are known for pushing boundaries and reaching high goals, and with the right mindset and habits in place, this can be your best year yet. So take a breath, reset, and remember: success starts with a strong foundation. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Transportation Turmoil : Ebr's Returning Transportation Nightmare | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link Transportation Turmoil : Ebr's Returning Transportation Nightmare Vivienne Leachman Aug 18, 2025 As students return to East Baton Rouge Parish, one thing that has consistently persisted to shroud the first days of school in darkness is the district's often insufficient transportation system. As students return to East Baton Rouge Parish, one thing that has consistently persisted to shroud the first days of school in darkness is the district's often insufficient transportation system. Some of the many challenges that officials have to grapple with around the district are route delays, mechanical failures, safety incidents, and systematic inconsistency that negatively affect students' classroom experience. Once schools reopened in the fall of 2023, EBRPSS acknowledged how many bus routes were delayed and pick up points had been changed -- which created confusion. Then Superintendent Sito Narcisse urged parents to just be patient. However, later that year, Kevin Ridgely the head of transportation and EBRPSS resigned after just 7 months on the job, highlighting frustrations with unresolved systematic transportation issues. In late 2024, the district was still experiencing troubles, and transportation started using external assistants to mitigate the shortage of drivers. These drivers, referred to as Trail relief drivers, were temporarily covering regular routes. However, many relief drivers drove the same routes for months. In May 2025, the district hired Prismatic Services, a national firm to help eliminate inefficient transfer locations and help aid in later School times. In July, EBRPSS introduced the transportation opt out program which allowed families who had other means of transportation to opt out of bus service, which reduced congestion on the roads and shortened route times. Ahead of the 2025 - 2026 school year EBRPSS implemented two key changes -- Aid in transportation by reaffirming the enforcement of state law that students living within a mile of the school must self transport, and replacing door-to-door service with Community pickup points to improve efficiency. Yet for students like Rainee Buster and Tamari Stephens who are 11th graders at Liberty Magnet High School, expressed how challenges haven't disappeared. Rainee said the transformation of her route to a transfer route added nearly 90 minutes to her trip home. “ If they had a more organized system and paid their bus drivers better --there wouldn't be so many kids without a bus and had actually got home at a decent hour safely”, Rainee said. Tamari also expressed how she believed the reoccurring transportation issues would affect her education. Stating how ” Missing class time slows down my learning and makes it harder for me to catch up over time this could lead to serious problems.” Tamari said. These are just some of the negative testimonies from students who are tired of the systematic transportation issues in their District. Whilst EBRPSS Transportation overhaul marks one of his largest systematic reforms to the transportation department in years, the challenges in the district are far from over. The success of new routes, upgraded buses and increased safety measures will truly be measured, not in arrival times but whether students like tomorrow and rainy days can depend on safe consistent rides every day. Reliable transportation isn't a luxury, it's a difference between falling behind and having a fair shot at success. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.
