If you ever visit Chi City, what are the main spots to hit? I have visited Chicago a total of 10 times and have stayed there for one to two months at a time, so I know some places to see. Starting off with restaurants, D’Amtos’s Bakery is one of my favorite restaurants in the whole city. They have amazing Italian pastries, my favorite being the apricot cookies. As well, they have sandwiches, including chicken parm, the one I always get, caesar wrap, caprese, and types of pasta. It is located in the west loop neighborhood and gets pretty busy during the week, so prepare to wait in a line! Although it is more of a touristy place, Amorino is the best place to get gelato on a hot summer day. Their gelato is very yummy, but their gelato macaroons are even better! I usually buy the pistachio flavor each time I go. After you’re done eating, head over to Millennium Park, as the park is located right next to Amorino. It is such a pretty park and includes gardens and places for little kids to play! The playground is huge and even at my age, I get pretty entertained. A quick 10 minute walk to Monroe Street leads you to the Art institution. It could take you three hours to a whole day just walking around the place, and it is truly beautiful. Lastly, there are beaches all along Lake Michigan that are worth walking too. The lake is one of my favorite parts of Chicago and it seems more like an ocean than anything else. If you ever were to go, would you visit any of these? comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • OPINION: Youth’s Importance in Politics | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link OPINION: Youth’s Importance in Politics Akeelaha Scott Feb 20, 2025 Why is the younger generation always underestimated when it comes to challenging norms and even speaking up for themselves? Why is the younger generation always underestimated when it comes to challenging norms and even speaking up for themselves? Ultimately the youth is seen as immature since they have not experienced much in life. That should not take away from them getting the attention they deserve when fighting for their/others rights. It is said that older generations know best since they have witnessed history unfold. But if they knew best they would have fought during those times for what they believed in and maybe the world would not be in the state it is in today. Younger generations are constantly showing their dedication to fighting for things that will affect them and future generations. By emphasizing the importance of being involved and spreading awareness. Most times the younger generation is left to educate themselves and older generations because they tend to be stuck in their ways or believe that if it doesn’t affect them they do not have to care. Younger generations tend to be more educated due to the fact that they are constantly doing research on past events and things happening around the world. The reason politics should involve the youth in some way is because they tend to be on the front lines fighting for what's right. Constantly attending protests, organizing events, and even taking to social media to emphasize the importance of staying up to date on what's happening in the world. For that reason it is shown in data that the youth has higher voter turnout than older generations. The youth is also always calling out those who only participate in activism online whether they are a celebrity or not. Finally, the importance of youth in politics is because the decisions made today affect them in the long run and also educated younger generations helps the world in the long run. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • REVIEW - Madea's Family Funeral | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link REVIEW - Madea's Family Funeral It was dead before the Funeral. Madea’s Family Funeral is my favorite movie from the Tyler Perry series. The film follows Madea and her crew as they travel to Georgia and unexpectedly have to plan a funeral. Anthony, Vienna’s husband, suffers a heart attack while in a hotel room with Renee. Madea goes to investigate the room next to hers and discovers the two together, while Anthony has already passed from the heart attack. The events in this movie are extremely funny. My personal favorite is when Madea and her crew go to buy a casket for the funeral, and when they view it, the casket keeps opening on its own. You would have to watch it to fully understand how funny it is. Tyler Perry’s movies never fail to make me laugh, and part of what makes it so funny is that Perry plays multiple roles at once. The movie is super chaotic, which also makes it even funnier. The constant secrets being revealed within the family, along with the unseriousness of the characters in each scene, add to the humor. Another standout moment is when the family is waiting outside to see if the husband recovers, and Bam keeps almost blurting out the secret while Madea repeatedly slaps her, one of the funniest scenes in the movie. I could definitely watch this movie over and over again. If you like unhinged comedy, I would definitely recommend it. Tyler Perry somehow turns a sad situation into something comedic, which helps take away from the heaviness of the story, something he consistently does in his films. I rate this movie a solid 10 out of 10. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

The book Atomic Habits by James Clear explains how small changes can lead to big results. Clear says that if you get just 1% better each day, those small wins will add up over time. He uses stories and examples to show how habits are formed. The author talks about how good habits can help you succeed and bad habits can hold you back. One strategy in the book is “habit stacking,” which means adding a new habit to something you already do. Another idea is to change your environment to make good habits easier. For example, if you put water bottles in easy-to-see places, you will probably drink more water. Clear also explains how breaking bad habits starts with removing triggers for them. The book is simple to read and is not filled with confusing words. The advice is realistic and can work for students, workers, or anyone trying to improve. It focuses more on creating a system than relying only on motivation. This makes the lessons more practical and long-lasting. Reading this book made me think about my own daily habits. I started noticing small changes I could make right away. Overall, Atomic Habits is a useful and inspiring book that can help people reach their goals. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • OPINION - What’s Your Sign? Netflix Has a Show for That. | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link OPINION - What’s Your Sign? Netflix Has a Show for That. Kaylee Martin Aug 22, 2025 This week, Netflix has launched a new astrology-themed collection that curates TV shows and movies on the platform for each zodiac sign. This week, Netflix has launched a new astrology-themed collection that curates TV shows and movies on the platform for each zodiac sign. The idea began when the team noticed that Mercury was in retrograde during the release of the British-American dystopian anthology “Black Mirror”. According to Netflix, titles are selected to match common personality traits associated with each star sign. For example, Cancers, who are known for their emotional depth, get passionate dramas; Aquarians, who are considered to be intellectual free-thinkers, get quirky sci-fis. Users can now browse rows of shows recommended specifically for their star sign or even explore others’ signs. Netflix hopes this feature will make the user experience feel a bit more personalized. Netflix’s decision to roll out zodiac-based content curation, in my opinion, is a very clever marketing strategy. Astrology has become incredibly popular among younger audiences, particularly Gen Z and millennials, who often refer to star signs for personal identity as well as entertainment. By tying in horoscopes with the platform, Netflix is giving its subscribers another way to consume content emotionally and socially. The approach is lighthearted, but also strategic. It keeps users engaged while simultaneously promoting more personalized viewing. I think this kind of content curation demonstrates how much major businesses are beginning to evolve beyond offering a product, but also proactively influencing and attempting to draw in a target audience. Personally, despite the fact that I do not take astrology seriously and more as a fun interest, I do find myself a bit intrigued by what they have chosen for each sign. …And frankly, I’m a little disappointed. Browsing through each section of Netflix’s recommendations, each series and movie they have chosen falls a bit flat for me. As a Cancer, I love my fair share of romantic drama—“The Notebook” is unmatched when it comes to making me absolutely sob, no matter how many times I watch it—but the titles listed are honestly a bit lazy. The suggestions, some of them being “Heartstopper”, “The Life List” and “Ginny & Georgia”, are all titles that are cliche and fall a bit flat. It feels as though Netflix went for the most obvious tearjerkers or coming-of-age dramas without considering taking a more nuanced path. I would have appreciated a blend of old and new titles, maybe even a few international films that carry heavier emotional weight or explore complex family dynamics. On the flip side, I can see how this strategy might appeal to casual viewers who want a quick, fun way to pick something to watch. For someone who just wants to unwind with something “on brand” for their sign, it probably works. But if you’re looking for something with more substance, you’ll likely have to dig a little deeper than what the new zodiac row provides. All in all, I don’t think Netflix's zodiac collection is meant to be taken too seriously. It’s more of a novelty, and is Netflix’s way of reaching their audience in a fun way. That being said, if viewers really want to lean into astrology, I’d suggest bringing in astrologers or critics to collaborate on these watchlists. That could add a bit of credibility and depth to an otherwise shallow experience. Astrology fans are often more invested and informed than businesses give them credit for. If Netflix wants to build a new loyalty with that audience, they’ll need to do more than slap a few obvious shows under each sign. In general, I think it’s important not to let algorithms or astrology determine too much of what we consume. Sometimes discovery and randomness are what lead us to our favorite shows. Still, I appreciate that Netflix is trying something new that taps into culture without being divisive or overly serious. In the end, it’s just another way to have fun, and that’s the whole point of entertainment. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • OPINION: Tik Tok Should Have Stayed Banned - But Not For The Reason You Think | TLFP

Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link OPINION: Tik Tok Should Have Stayed Banned - But Not For The Reason You Think Ellis Turner Feb 17, 2025 Maybe the short-lived ban of the popular video sharing app shouldn't have been so short-lived after all. The United States just about broke down when congress announced that TikTok, a popular social media platform, would be banned. The app has around 170 million users in the US alone. Many of these users are content creators as well, who use their platforms for a variety of topics. When the devastating news was shared, creators and silent scrollers alike were quick to share their opinions. Lawmakers and US officials shared that the app’s Chinese origins posed a national security threat. Many officials believed that the app was able to gather and sell data to China. American users proposed many conspiracies against the ban and shared frustrations as to why congress was spending time on such a thing. Others flat-out shared that they did not care if China was stealing their information. On January 19, the ban took effect. When users opened the app they were greeted with a message explaining the issue. However, no more than 24 hours later the app was back up. Content on TikTok resumed as normal and America rejoiced. After the scare, creators seemed to move on to the next new thing quickly. While scrolling through the app you’re unlikely to find content on the same issues for long. On TikTok information comes and goes, even something as big as banning the app entirely. Therein lies the issue with TikTok; short-form content forces users to move too quickly. The problem is not whether our data is being sold to China because it’s being sold everywhere else. The issue is that our attention-spans are being sold. The rise of short-form content has been detrimental to our mental states and focus. Let’s think back to what entertainment looked like a few decades ago. If we were bored we’d read a book or go talk to our families. Fast forward a few more years and now we have movies to keep us entertained. I have vivid memories of picking out DVDs to rent with my mom whenever we had the chance. Now, we have a million streaming services to watch whatever we want, whenever we want. Social media is no different, we can tune into the world at the tap of a button. Notice a trend? The activities we use for stimulation and dopamine have gotten shorter and shorter. So has our attention spans. Somehow, we’ve deemed scrolling through an endless stream of videos as entertaining. One minute you’ve just gotten home from school and, taking a quick break, you decide to scroll before starting your homework. The next moment the sun's setting and you haven’t gotten anything done. With this realization you finally sit down to do your homework but you find it hard to concentrate. Why is that? By introducing these short videos, TikTok has been able to successfully appeal to our basic animalistic functions. A study conducted by B.F. Skinner in the 1920s went as follows: Skinner placed a rat in a box with a lever. When pulled, the lever would produce a treat. As the rat went from accidentally pulling the lever to intentionally pulling it Skinner saw the rats behavior change. Eventually, the rat lost interest in pulling the lever. Skinner then began feeding the rat at random intervals. Immediately the rat's excitement came back. So much so that the rat would lose interest in more important tasks such as grooming and sleeping just in case a treat was produced. This is the same thing happening with TikTok. The uncertainty we have about what the next video could be keeps us engaged. This phenomenon has had a variety of effects on our mental states. According to psychiatrist Dr. Kanojia, “...what's happening is we are actually selecting for shorter and shorter attention spans. So as kids start watching TikTok and if we kind of look at the adhd diagnosis, adhd has been increasing all along.” That’s right folks, TikTok is increasing the symptoms of ADHD in kids. That idea boils back down to our decreasing ability to focus on one thing. We don’t have to wait to get to the ‘good part’ of things anymore, thus limiting our capacity to concentrate. The dopamine we receive when engaging in stimulating activities is now just being handed to us. The availability of millions of topics gets us excited and ready to move onto the next thing. Many of them joked that the ban would help them get their lives together. I believe these jokes are becoming a reality. While TikTok doesn’t necessarily need to be banned, it does need to be limited in some way. We can’t keep sacrificing hours of our time to watch influencers unbox the next great product. If you made it this far, great! If you skipped to the end here's the rundown: We’re spending more and more time watching 30 second videos which inhibit our reward systems. Instead of having to sit through a movie or read a book our dopamine is handed to us on a red and blue platter. As TikTok grabs more and more attention the cycle will keep going. I encourage students and adults alike to find hobbies or extracurricular activities. While TikTok doesn’t need to be banned, as it’s a great resource, time spent on it should be heavily reduced. The endless stream of videos does more harm than good. We’re investing more than just our time when scrolling. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Concerts are an important part of human life and culture. They are shared experiences that allow people to truly be themselves and vibe to music. If you have ever been to a concert, which one was your favorite? The best concert I ever attended was an NBA YoungBoy concert. The energy was amazing, and it was powerful to see people who others would normally look down upon because they are dressed a certain way come together simply to enjoy music by a rapper we all appreciate. Concerts bring people together in ways we often do not even realize. Attending a show with an incredible setlist, strong sound, and high-quality production is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I believe everyone should have at least once. I spoke with my friend Nyla about a concert she attended and how it made her feel. She said, “I loved the NBA YoungBoy concert. His energy was so good. ..it felt like you could tell he missed being in his own city. At first, he was just standing in one spot rapping, almost like he was nervous. But once he realized we were rapping every song and really vibing with him, he started to loosen up too. He was running up and down the stage, doing his little dance, and rapping until he ran out of breath. It was an unforgettable experience.” comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on tariffs on all but the most countries, cutting them to 10%, as he raises tariffs on Chinese Imports to 125%. The announcement came in reaction to extreme Market turmoil, including a sudden spike in government borrowing prices and concerns that the United States may enter into recession. The bond market was also in turmoil, with 30-year government bonds yielding more than 5% evoking fears of the 2008 financial crisis. The treasury Secretary of God blessing and other economic officials play the key role in convincing the president to take the pause, starting the administration's unpreparedness to deal with the economic effect and risk of Financial and stability. Market reactions were positive. There remains uncertainty over the long-term direction for the US trade policy, especially as tensions with China continue to escalate. Trump's actions of suspending tariffs on most countries and raising them significantly on China can have a dual impact on ordinary americans. On the one hand, the suspension is good news in the sense that it gives short-term relief for inflation. If the terrorist attacks came into effect across the board, some important goods like Electronics clothing and even food products would have become much more expensive. that would have devastated a lot of people especially considering that inflation already was making American families tighten on their money. by retreating for short-term purposes, on those broader tariffs, that Administration could have avoided interrupt Spike and consumer prices. comments debug Comments (1) Write a comment Write a comment Sort by: Newest grimgm Apr 17, 2025 no Like Reply
